VIRTUAL VISIT- YVETTE MAYORGA

YVETTE MAYORGA

VIRTUAL VISIT, JULY, 2018

ICE ICE LADY, 2017, acrylic piping on canvas, 20” diameter

There are some artists that I just can’t physically visit, so I asked Yvette Mayorga, based in Chicago, if she would be willing to figure out a way to have a virtual studio visit. We had a conversation via text a few weeks ago and Yvette shared some of her day to day, images of her studio, and the influence of the immigrant experience on her practice. Yvette Mayorga has a  BFA in Painting with a Minor in Anthropology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and an MFA in Fiber and Material Studies from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Yvette is a Mexican- American, working with a variety of lush materials and colors to consider her heritage and future. The work seduces viewers while simultaneously referencing culture and political divides in the United States and beyond.
